Community Involvement
Career FairMedical Science Academy invites different medical professionals and college recruiters to gather and inform students about their careers and answer any questions they may have. This helps expose our students to different medical field options and college and career choices. Some of these include but are not limited to: Radiologists, Nutritionists/Dietitians, Emergency Medical Technicians.
ClinicalsThe seniors of MSA go to health care related facilities and locations to shadow different professions in the medical field at the end of every nine weeks. This allows them to get exposure from many different areas in the medical field, get an idea of what each student wants to pursue, and inform the community about the Medical Science Academy. Year 4 students in MSA are usually the eldest and most mature, so they have the most responsibility and capability to shadow and gain experience through clinicals.
ShadowingThe Medical Science Academy allows you to go out and shadow health professionals. Shadowing is where you follow a health care professional for a whole day and see what it is like for a day in that profession. Some health care professionals may not allow some of our students to shadow just because the work place may have an age limit or other restrictions that may not allow for them to shadow. Groundhog Day, February 2nd, is the day normally set aside for students in MSA (during the school day) to shadow a health care professional in the health care setting.
VolunteeringThe Medical Science Academy requires a minimum of 20 hours of community service during the summer and 5 hours are permitted of solely shadowing a health care professional. The student can choose to go wherever they want as long as it is health care related - such as food pantries, clinical facilities, nursing homes, and dentist offices.(Because of limitations on outreach to younger students, it is acceptable for students to shadow or volunteer outside of a clinic). Additional community service hours can be acquired throughout the year to go towards Distinguished Graduate honors and overall community service for the four-year academy.

Prom Promise 2013The Medical Science Academy puts together a scene, whether it is a mock crash scene or a drug reenactment to speak out to the students on the things that could happen on prom night. We get the local community involved to help bring it all together, from the local police to the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s ambulances and air care.
